Art In the Service of Memory: The Forbidden Art of Auschwitz by Agnieszka Sieradzka
Agnieszka will give a talk on the Auschwitz Museum’s art, a unique collection with great historical value. These artistic works, made under conditions of extreme danger, are exceptional and moving documents of a historical time. Despite harsh punishment for making art not ordered by camp authorities, prisoners created illegal art in secret. Most important are the works that document the reality of the camp: portraits of fellow prisoners and drawings of scenes from camp life.
AGNIESZKA SIERADZKA - Art historian, and Curator of the art collections of the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum since 2005, Agnieszka has researched the topic of illegal art of prisoners in Auschwitz. DANIEL TURBOW - Daniel Turbow is a retired New York City Family Court Judge and an attorney who resides in Brooklyn, New York and Marseille, France.
