Maki Shimano

Maki, a graphic designer and calligrapher based in Tokyo, Japan, grew up around her father's bookbinding and printing career, always surrounded by letters, type and papers. Since the age of 5, she has started learning Shodo (Japanese calligraphy). Upon graduation, she worked as a wedding planner and found herself writing food menus and wedding stationery. In 2012, she fell in love with modern calligraphy and used it to bring a new design style to Japanese weddings. Subsequently, she expanded into corporate work with on-site writing, logo-creation, etc. For this Symbiosis journey, Maki brings a fusion of Japanese and Western cultures, with family and time as the themes of my work.
