An artist based in India
Arathi Ayyangar
When a keen interest in calligraphy and the world of illumination took hold of her, she willingly flew thousands of miles to learn from world-renowned masters and artists, all of whom have been extremely giving in guiding her progress.
Her thirst for calligraphy skills caused her to apply herself diligently to the assiduous practice of Copperplate, Roman minuscules, Italian Hand, Uncial, Gothicized Italic, Seastones Script as well as modern lettering. She balances self-critique with the humility of knowing that art is a life-long process of learning. Her vibrant works are touched with elegance and whimsy, and they reflect her thoughtful, philosophical approach to life. Arathi also has a studio where she produces commissioned mosaic and 3D relief works.
Being an MBA and a Certified Life Coach, she spent 14 years as a corporate warrior until she found her calling in art. She has not looked back since!

BASED IN | United Kingdom
TITLE | Across the Oceans
This collaborative piece is based on the theme of ‘Nature’. The centre section was written, painted and illuminated by Susan Lui in Singapore with the central image being inspired by a traditional Peranakan tile. The work was then flown to India, for Arathi Ayyangar to add words, an illuminated border and an Indian miniature painting. Finally, it arrived in the UK to have a border of English oak leaves added by Toni Watts in 24 carat, red, green, green and moon gold on gesso, with acorns gilded with platinum leaf, tooled to create the acorn ‘cups’. None of the artists knew what the previous person was planning to add to the piece so it grew organically – a confluence of styles and cultures with lots of gold.
